Amy Cannon (9) who lives in Broadstairs decided to take
on her very own Cycle Challenge earlier this year in aid of Pilgrims Hospices.
The 10 mile challenge which took place in Fowlmead saw Amy raise £211 in sponsorship for the hospice.
Amy said: “I wanted to take on this challenge to raise funds for Pilgrims Hospices in memory of my Grandma and Grandad who passed away at Pilgrims Hospice in Thanet.”
She first took up cycling aged six when her Dad Neil Cannon began training for the charity’s annual Tri-Hospice Cycle Challenge in memory of his parents.
Said Neil: “Amy wanted to take on the cycle challenge and I had to explain she needed to be a bit older for that, but she was so keen to help other people. I said if she can ride 10 miles we will sponsor her in her own challenge, since then she has built up gradually to riding this distance and asking for sponsorship. I am so proud.”
Next year Amy is set on doing another cycle challenge but doubling her miles to 20.
Karen Kenward, Community Fundraising Manager, said: “Thank you Amy for your enthusiasm in taking this challenge on and for your support to Pilgrims Hospices. Your family and everyone at the hospice are immensely proud of your achievement. It goes to show it doesn’t matter what age you are, or what your interests are, there are plenty of ways to get involved to support charities in your community. Amy’s story is really inspiring for everyone.”
Each year Pilgrims Hospices gives care and comfort to over 2,300 patients in east Kent. Care is provided from three hospice sites in Ashford, Canterbury and Margate as well as in the community and patient’s own homes.
